Cascadeur Carves Out An Advertising Layer

As AI features get expensive to run and software margins thin out, advertising keeps turning up in tools that never carried it. Cascadeur, a 3D character-animation tool, replaced its bare 2019 privacy policy with a full 2025 rewrite that mostly catches up on US state laws and names a data protection officer, but also brings in Google and Meta advertising cookies and lists targeted advertising as a reason to collect your data. An animation tool has grown an advertising layer, and that drift, creative tools edging into the ad business, is the part worth watching.

In human terms: You visit Cascadeur’s site to grab the animation tool. The refreshed policy says the site can now set advertising cookies from Google and Meta and use your information for targeted advertising, if you consent. The 2019 policy this replaced had none of that. For a tool you reach for to make animation, an advertising layer is a new and slightly odd ingredient.

Why this matters: The trend underneath this is simple. AI features are expensive to run, subscription margins are under pressure, and companies go looking for new revenue, so advertising infrastructure starts showing up where it never used to be. The Ledger has already seen the large version of this, when OpenAI began building ad-data collection into ChatGPT. Cascadeur is the small version: a niche creative tool wiring in ad trackers and a targeted-advertising purpose. None of it fires without consent, so the immediate risk is low, but the direction is the story. Creative tools are starting to look a little more like marketing businesses, and the privacy policy is where you will see it first.

The mechanics:

•Cascadeur’s own change note frames the rewrite as cleanup. It lists, as a June 20, 2025 change: “Added expanded information about the cookies used on the site. Added information about our DPO.” The version it replaced was dated “Version February 28, 2019.”

•A targeted-advertising purpose is now listed. One stated reason for processing reads: “To perform our advertising activities, i.e. targeted advertising etc.” Cascadeur says this rests on your consent.

•Advertising cookies are named for the first time. The new cookie table lists a Google AdSense cookie used “for experimenting with advertisement efficiency across Websites,” and a Meta cookie used “to deliver a series of advertising products, such as real-time bidding from third-party advertisers.”
